The story takes place in the 1970s in Russia. A group of amateur actors decides to recreate the biblical Book of Esther, while the Soviet authorities consider it political provocation and do everything possible to prevent the performance. As the ancient story unfolds, the main character, like her Persian twin, discovers her Jewish identity and the link to her people.
